sea fog

Through the fog surrounding trees
how could I see?
How could I see?

Aided by just a pale blue light
coming towards me
how could I see
anything but trees?

A whistle
coming from beyond the sea
— the dark blue sea
ambling alongside the night —
if I thought it was you
how would I know I was right?

But it surely was not
for it just cannot be
you fluttered far above
unreachable, hard to see
and how could I ever know
you were calling me?

Now you’re gone
— or was it really just ‘it’?
And where that presence once shone
the light has now quit
